A good exercise equipment mat is pretty much a necessity if you lead an active lifestyle and you own a piece of fitness equipment.  An exercise equipment mat will not only serve to protect your flooring, but it will also provide some protection for the machine you place on top of it as well.

Now you may not be getting it for that reason only though, as it can also make for a good workout mat as well.  You may want to use the mat for performing your stretches on or for performing some yoga on if that is a past time you engage in.

Regardless of why you want the mat, there are a variety of different sized mats to choose from.  Mats also come in many different textures, sizes and thickness depending upon what your needs are, the good thing though is that all of them are very affordable so there really isn’t any reason for you not to have one.

Most of the ones I’ve seen have ranged between $30-50 which is a paltry sum to pay in order to protect a $1,000+ piece of exercise equipment.  You see, when you lay your mat down on the floor, if the floor is carpeted, you are essentially preventing fibers from the carpet from entering into the machinery and causing it to break down prematurely.

Of course you’re also protecting your hard wood flooring which might be even more expensive than that from damage.  When you are running on a treadmill you are exerting a lot of pressure on both the treadmill and the floor beneath it.  If you’re not careful, you can wind up with indentations in the floor or even cracks if you have no protection.

It really is silly to get a $1000 machine and not get a simple mat to cover the floor before placing it over top of it.  The cost is negligible and it works great as a protective shield between your machine and the floor.

You of course want to make sure that the mat is going to be large enough for the machine you’re buying it for though.  Do make sure you know the exact dimensions of the exercise equipment you’re about to install before you go and buy a corresponding exercise equipment mat.  If you can find the equipment pre-assembled on a showroom floor, you can bring a tape measure along with you to see just what it measures up to.  Alternatively you may be able to find this information on the box or even verify it with someone who works at the store.

Now depending on the weight of the machine, you’re also going to want to pay attention to the thickness of the exercise equipment mat that you wind up getting.   A lot of the mats you’ll find are ¼” thick, but you may want to go thicker if you’re particularly worried.

Hopefully this has provided you with some info that will help you pick out your next exercise equipment mat, good luck in your search!
